"The Dead", a visual art installation by Mary M. Mazziotti
Future Tenant is pleased to present a new installation by Mary M. Mazziotti. In The Dead, Ms. Mazziotti uses mixed media to create a series of visual art pieces that explore our relationship to death, remembrance and loss of identity. Ms. Mazziotti is a Pittsburgh native who has shown her work in Pennsylvania, New York and Minnesota, and as far abroad as Iceland and Spain. The Dead marks her latest exhibition in Pittsburgh, and her first in Future Tenant’s venue for new and emerging artists.
The Dead draws inspiration from a cache of photographs, discovered during renovations of the Allegheny County Morgue. The photos of the unclaimed dead date from as early as the 1900’s, taken for purposes of possible future identification. Who were these people? Were they friendless victims and lonely strangers? Were they criminals and psychopaths? Do they deserve to be memorialized and honored, or reviled and forgotten? These photos and the questions surrounding them were the starting point for Ms. Mazziotti’s captivating series of art.
Mary M. Mazziotti was born in Pittsburgh in 1950, and received a BFA in Drama from Carnegie Mellon University in 1972. By her own assessment, however, she was a terrible actress and eventually began to work in advertising, serving as a writer and creative director with major ad agencies in Bermuda, the Middle East, Singapore and Jakarta. In 1989, Ms. Mazziotti returned to her hometown of Pittsburgh where she began her self-directed art studies in 1990. Since then she has exhibited widely and won numerous awards and international residency grants. Best known as a painter, the mixed media of The Dead marks a significant new phase in Ms. Mazziotti’s artistic career. She currently lives in the historic West End with her husband, architect Keith Cochran.
Through this exhibition, Future Tenant weekly hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday, 12:00 to 8:00 pm. On the evening of Friday, July 2, Future Tenant will host an opening reception for this exhibition, which will feature light refreshments and an opportunity to meet Ms. Mazziotti. The reception will take place from 6:00 to 9:00 pm
