Visual Artwork For pit airport transit murals

Future Tenant in partnership with The Allegheny County Airport Authority (ACAA) is soliciting qualifications from individual artists or artist teams, to provide two visual artwork reproductions for installation at the Pittsburgh International Airport. The piece will be printed on fine vinyl in a large scale format, all mediums that can be replicated in this form are encouraged to apply. 

About Future Tenant:

Future Tenant, a pop-up art space in Pittsburgh, provides a laboratory setting for artists, arts managers, and audiences to explore the limits of the creative expression, presentation, and interpretation of various art forms.  Future Tenant was founded in 2002 as an initiative of Carnegie Mellon University’s College of Fine Arts and Carnegie Mellon’s Master of Arts Management program, with the collaboration of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.

About Art in the Airport

Art in the Airport aims to enhance the experience of the facilities for visitors and staff, by presenting visual art, performing art, and public art of the highest quality.  Temporary and diverse programming will attract attention and investment from repeat business and leisure travelers, as well as local visitors and employees.

Overview 

A selection panel comprised of Future Tenant Directors and the Art in the Airport Advisory Committee members will select one artist or artist team, to produce two wall murals that will welcome arriving and departing travelers at the Pittsburgh International Airport. Successful proposals will embody the eclectic energy of Pittsburgh and will provide an aesthetically pleasing addition to the halls of the airport. The work will be printed on fine vinyl, printing and installation labor and costs are covered by the Pittsburgh International Airport. The selected project will be given a period of six (6) months to exhibit said work. 

Proposals will be accepted from October 25, 2019 until November 25, 2019 at 6:00 PM, from artists of art, design, and architecture in Southwestern Pennsylvania.  After review of submissions by Future Tenant and the Pittsburgh International Airport Advisory Committee, the final selection of the artist(s) will be notified by December 02, 2019.

The selected artist will have two weeks to produce final edits and an award of $500 for each design which will be printed on vinyl at the dimensions listed below.  The completed installation will be unveiled in January 2020, to coincide with the New Year.

Eligibility and Qualifications:

  • This opportunity is open to professional artists based in the Southwest Pennsylvania region. 

  • Public art experience preferred

  • Artist teams are welcome to apply. Teams must have at least one visual artist to qualify.

  • Final artwork must be able to be photographed to at least 300dpi

SELECTION PROCESS

Each proposal will be evaluated by a selection committee and will be reviewed for responsiveness to the aforementioned eligibility. The following will be considered: 

  • The aesthetic quality of artwork submitted

  • The appropriateness of the artwork for a public setting

  • Quality and completeness of the application materials

Future Tenant and The Art in the Airport Committee, which is comprised of community and airport representatives, will review submissions and reserves the right to accept or reject proposals.

 

HOW TO APPLY

Please submit the following required items in one .pdf file to the Future Tenant Submittable: https://futuretenant.submittable.com/submit 

  • A narrative explanation no more than 800 words that includes:

      • A statement of interest regarding the display of artwork at the airport

      • A statement of experience related to previous public artwork

      • A site rendering of the artwork within the proposed space

  • 1-3 images of the proposed artwork for each location

  • A resume or CV

 

Incomplete submissions will not be reviewed.

All submissions must be received by 11/25/2019 by 6:00 PM EDT.

 

Important Details: 

The artwork will be printed on vinyl and the Pittsburgh International Airport will cover the costs of printing and installing.

The artist will be awarded $500 for each design, accumulating to $1000 in total, in consideration of their time and effort.

Consider the location; the airport is a public space, with sometimes nervous travelers, we want this piece to be a fun and inviting welcome to the city of Pittsburgh.
